silliness, DBZ, reviews, cold update

An average encounter with my little brother.

Me: Arrr!
Bro: Arrr!
Me: We be pirates. Aye?
Bro: Arrr!
Me: Not "arrr", "aye"!
Bro: "Arrr" be all I know how to say!
Me: Argh. You fail pirate school. Begone ye scurvy dog!
Bro: Ay- er, Arrr!
Me: Wait! Say it with me - Ay-
Bro: Arrr!
Me: *headdesk*
Both of us collapse into helpless giggle fits (then remember we were actually just trying to get a drink from the fridge).

Those who follow my reading exploits at [livejournal.com profile] ficrecs will know I have inexplicably wandered into the realms of DBZ fic. I don't intend to stay there very long. In fact, I've only got about three more fics left to read before I run out of stuff that's well-written and vaguely in character (I say vaguely because I honestly haven't seen/read enough of DBZ to be able to tell). I've been pondering why I'm doing so considering I find the manga only tolerable to read, and the anime is... well, let's just say that I can only sit through an episode by treating it like it's a B-movie and mocking it to high heaven (my bro and I have actually gotten through about five episodes this way, which brings the total number of episodes I've watched up to six!).

I think there's two reasons. One is that I love reading action/adventure, and unfortunately the Yu Yu Hakusho fandom is severely lacking in that (at least not without a serious romantic plot attached *gag me*). While the DBZ fandom does have it's romances, it also has these really long, epic adventure stories and AUs (half of which I can't read because I'd never be able to tell the difference between the AU and canon anyway). Two, is that the fic is actually better than canon in that it moves the plot forward without taking seventy million panels to power up/talk/style their hair/etc. Not that all of it is, but I'm not interested in searching for anything other than the few recs I've found and a nice long, adventure fic where I'm only vaguely familar with the universe and characters that takes me about ten hours to read is kind of soothing to find. (A third and more amusing reason is that I can't nitpick the fics that much since I know next to nothing about the series.)

Incidently, dreams about DBZ are nearly as tedious as watching the show. If I see Mirai Trunks fly around and talk (I don't remember him ever actually getting around to fighting) one more time...

I got a review today for Sands of Time in which the reader told me it was very well-written , but completely incomprehensible to her, just like Kafka's writings. o_O I'm not really sure what to make of that...

My cold is finally starting to get better (and my interview was postponed until later this week). Sore throat is gone even if my nose and head are killing me and I'm still coughing. Oh, and I have my period, because what's a cold without the added fun of cramps?
