Rome 1-2

I suppose when I read that [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve enjoyed this series, I should have known I would like it as well (if it doesn't send her into rants about historical accuracy then it's certainly not going to bother me (considering ancient history is nowhere close to being my specialty)). Actually, the episode had me hooked from the fight scene at the beginning, which despite flashbacks to Gladiator and despite their obviously limited number of people, was actually pretty realistic. Not all battles are bloody slaughters. Of course, I may just have been happy to see Roman military tactics in action. I was thrilled, if slightly amused, at the Vercingetorix surrendering scene partially because I have studied the Gallic Wars in detail and so it was nice to see it on screen, and partially because they were obviously modeling the whole thing on that rather famous painting of it which is so not historically accurate, but nevermind. Oh, and how cool was it to see them burning their own camp at the end?

As for the rest, it was fun to watch. I had a lot of trouble catching people's names, not that it matters all that much since I can't remember names anyway, but the sound on the episodes I have is horrible. I actually had to plug my computer into our living room's sound system so I could even hear anything above a whisper. Loved the sacrifice and the divorces and marriages and how everyone was very human. Oh, and they got the crucifixion right <3! (Yes, I get excited about very weird things:P)

There were some very cool things, like when they led the horse through the streets of Rome in the first ep, I could recognize, very vaguely, places I've seen before in ruined form. Oh, and a live trepanning. Yay! And the Senate. Bwahaha! Er, I'm going to stop rambling happily now.

And it only gets better!!!

Crazy to hear you mention the sound as well... Our HBO main channel has always had that sound problem, forcing us to turn it up to hear the show... I figured it was an HBO thing.

Just wait, you'll get to see Anthony naked!

I caught an ep of that a couple of days ago, it does look excellent. O_O *can't wait for next ep*

Hee! Am I getting a reputation?

The opening credits have the agathodemon snake from one of the frescoes they found at Herculaneum! The temple columns are painted and garlanded! They include things in a way that makes sense! Cicero is played by the guy who was Mr Collins in Pride and Prejudice! It's still not quite dirty enough, and James Purefoy is making me want to like Marc Antony (which is a problem), but dammit, I do like it :D

So I wasn't the only one squealing in glee over the crucifixion? :D WHEE! :D
