About the Lackey book: she has a 'series' of fairy-tale retellings in a version of our past (turn of the century to the 1920s) that includes elemental magic. They're pretty much all like the one you read -- a decent way to kill an hour or three, but nothing to write home about. They include The Fire Rose (Beauty and the Beast, in California) The Serpent's Shadow (Snow White, with the weirdest reinterpretation of the seven dwarves I've ever come across), and one other that I'm not remembering offhand.

Lackey is best when not taken seriously.

About reviewers: you can never underestimate the stupidity and perversity of the human race. Every time I think I have, someone does something even dumber. Sometimes that person is me. *sigh*
