A poll and cooking

[Poll #1441864]

I used up most of our pots and pans and all of our knives today to cook, in no particular order, buffalo burgers, macaroni and cheese (for my lunch tomorrow), banana bread, and the creamed new potatoes my dad remembers my grandmother making. Using a very old cookbook since my dad couldn't remember anything about it other than that the sauce was creamy, I actually recreated it perfectly (probably because that was a similar recipe to what my grandmother used). I'm very proud of myself. Also it was quite tasty.

I've wasted the day away reading Star Trek 09 fic, but at least I've worked on Uric a bit.

..Hmm, for your poll, I'd have to say I look for cars first, and then assess the amount of space they're giving me to move. So... both.

Wow, that sounds yummy. :D

I don't understand your poll. I'd need a "both" option, especially as I don't see how you can separate the two.

I should have phrased it, "What do you look for?" rather than see.

It makes no difference. I still look for both, and can't understand how/why you would separate the two (you can't assess the distance between the cars without looking to see if there are any, and if so, where they are...)

I'm not sure if you saw my post (http://deralte.livejournal.com/549902.html) after this about why I posted this poll.

And I believe it does make a difference. I look for the space where my car will fit into the traffic. I see both the cars and the spaces, but what I'm looking for is the space. I'm not looking for the cars unless I'm looking for a collision.

I had not seen the post, so your reason for asking is clearer now, but I don't think you're understanding what I mean by "it doesn't make a difference." My point is that you cannot look for one without looking for the other. You can't look for a space between cars without looking to see where the cars are. Ergo, you have to look for both. And yes, you can look for the cars without looking for a collision, because you can't prevent one without knowing where they are. Which is what I'm saying--it's all the same thing.

*shrugs* I think we're going to have to philosophically disagree because I believe it's the intent that counts. While you may see them, if you aren't actively looking for the cars, but are looking for the space between them, in my mind you'd be looking for the space regardless of whether you see the cars. But I can see we both have different definitions here and philosophies (being able to find the space without getting bogged down by the fist you're seeing is something you strive for in Bujinkan) so we might as well drop it.

That's kinda metaphysical. Can one look at objects without looking at the space between them? Or vice versa? Too much for my head to cope with on a Monday morning...

Now you know how I felt when I was told that most people look for the space between. But yeah, I should have phrased it as, "What do you look for?" not see.

my eyes track to the nearest car, then the car behind it judging the distance in the process, then the one behind it till I find a big enough gap, then if necessary my head turns the other way repeat the process and then I look back and forth between the 2 gaps to see if they synchronise.

So you look for the space in between. Interesting.

rude commenter no. 1 [livejournal.com profile] alto2 kind of has it right, but seems more interested in having an arguement than actually being helpful...

I look for cars, but part and parcel of that is looking for spaces as they tell you everything that informs your decision to pull out. speed, space, all that.

I just think [livejournal.com profile] alto2 and I have a different definition of 'look for', but whatever.

See, I'd put you down as 'cars' because that's what you consciously look for. Whether you see the spaces is incidental. *shrugs*
