Job thoughts

My mum suggested I consider non-traditional female careers, and I managed to time the sentence, "Well, I was considering how to become a stuntman" directly to her taking a drink. The result was beautiful *eg* Her suggestions were bodyguard or construction worker. Am pretty sure you need more qualifications than a second degree black belt to be a body guard, but I don't mind the idea of a construction worker. It'd be the opposite of archaeology *L* I expect I'd be a shoe in due to affirmative action policies. Wonder how much you make...

That's the trouble with being a quick learner. You find yourself with the basics for a lot of things, and you know you can master most jobs with no problem. I was telling [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve the other day about how, when I was 14, I ran a church office, including their finances for three months. It was my first job. *L*

In truth, what I really should do at this point is move to a city where I can get a cheap apartment and just pick up whatever job I want/can get. Trouble is, I need to move to a city where I can get a cheap apartment and it's just really hard to judge these things when you live so far away. I don't suppose anyone on my friends list has any advice?

Incidently, I fell in love with this icon I made of young Kakashi, and have made it my default for awhile, just because I enjoy staring at it too much. Must make even more Kakashi Gaiden icons, then do a nice post of them.

Well, our apt is $325 and includes heat and water with off street parking. We have a steal though (and we are in a good neighborhood). Most run about $500 here.

The Duluth MN/Superior WI metro area is about 150k people, lots of outdoorsy things and I think we have a few dozen martial arts places.

What else are you looking for?

I'm not really all that picky. The cheaper the apartment, the less paying a job I can settle for. (Which is a weird thing to say, but I only need the job so I can afford to live on my own long enough to write my book.) I guess I just need an area with low rent and a decent number of jobs available. $500 seems to be about standard (here in NJ it's 900...) though I'd like something closer to $400.

I know I talk about martial arts at lot, but I actually can live without classes. I just train on my own. I like the outdoors and prefer suburbs, but can live anywhere so long as I'm within driving distance of a supermarket and movie theatre. Think I should look around your area?

[identity profile] mollymoon.livejournal.com 2005-09-23 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely! Its a beautiful, vibrant area! And we definately have your shopping needs.

Actually, if you were serious I could ask my LL if he has an apt opening up anytime soon.

That would be great actually:) I'll start doing some research on jobs in the area.

No rooms here coming up, but it was worth a shot.

Mmm, thanks for asking:)

No problem, you'd still be welcome in my city.

*sigh* I have to make a decision about what I'm doing soon. I really can't afford to waste too much more time (not to mention my parents are driving me insane...).

[identity profile] mollymoon.livejournal.com 2005-09-26 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I do remember that feeling. If you wanted a place to stay for a few days up here so you could tour the area and look at apartments, you'd be more than welcome to stay with us (me, Grant and the two sugar gliders). I have a day bed in the living room that is very comfortable ;)

We're a one car household though, so you'd have to rent a car when you're up here unless you wanted to road trip from NJ ;)

Honestly, it is a wonderful place to live. Just big enough and just small enough.

If you can't get up here for a tour, but have an apt you want to know more about, I'd be happy to tour it and take pictures for you. Have digital camera, will travel.

Also, I didn't mention it before, but Superior is one of the few places I know of where its easy to get an apt without signing a lease, so you wouldn't be dictated time wise to that.

Plus, if you're here, I can stuff BPAL down your throat.

Hey, sorry to take so long to reply to this. I thought I had, then remembered I hadn't. Thank you for the offer(s):) I'm currently trying some cities closer to home (namely Pittsburgh) but you never know where I'll try next.

As for BPAL, you do realize that Cedar got to me long before you did? *g* I simply introduced my Mum to it and now I occasionally come home to random BPAL stuff lying on my bed, even if I consistently gravitate back to Eclipse time and again (mmm, almonds).

[identity profile] mollymoon.livejournal.com 2005-10-04 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Well, since I infected Cedar, I guess I can still take pride in it.

Have you tried Gluttony? You might like it if you like eclipse.

Oh, yes. I'd forgotten that you were the one to blame;)

No, I haven't. I'll ask my mum to try to get it when she's trading some of her imps:)

[identity profile] mollymoon.livejournal.com 2005-10-04 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Sheer curiousity now... I haven't unknowingly made an imp/bottle box for your mum, have I?

I don't think so. She only got hooked on BPAL around June, and she's only done 2-3 orders since.

My cousin's wife worked as a construction worker for Habitat for Humanity for a while. Now she's in law school.

I hear that security guards for topless bars get good tips.

It's still possible to get a 1-bedroom in Omaha for $300/month, though if you want something west of 72nd St. (which is generally desirable), it will be more. Traffic's good, there's a plethora of theaters, and it's generally a fifteen-minute drive to the middle of nowhere. Jobs open up regularly in a variety of fields. The place I used to live had 1-bedroom apartments for $425/month and was within walking distance of three supermarkets (one of them organic), a mall, a Barnes & Noble, and a Borders.

Hmm. I'll look into that. Thanks!

You could be an archeology manufacturer!
