I did go through the Visions of the Cosmos one (The Jung one is finished). It was fascinating to see all the various world views, though the Asian section of that exhibit made the European section look boring. I'm not sure if this applies to you, but admission for college students with ID is $2.
If you're looking for insanely cheap books, I recommend trying Book Off (east 41st, right near the Humanities library). They have large sections of books and even cds for only a dollar. I mostly seem to go into the city to buy used books *L*
