So, Sunday was my trip into the city to visit the Rubin Museum of Art's Jain art display for extra credit. I expected to meet up with a few students and our professor and make a morning/afternoon of it. Of course, when I checked the temp in the morning, it was 18 degrees out so I put on an extra layer and figured there'd be less people at the museum, but oh well. I had to leave an hour early cause that was when the only train was running, so I took the time after I hit Penn. st. to pick up my favourite Lush hand creme, which I've discovered this winter is pretty much the only commercial hand cream I can use without my hands itching (and that actually works). I was like, the first person in the store *L* Then I caught the subway to the museum only to discover that it opened at 11am which is when we were supposed to meet at the museum. If it had been warmer, this wouldn't have been a problem, but since I was already losing feeling in my extremities and it was only 10:30, I quickly hurried down the street and into Westfield Market (or something like that) which was this gourmet supermarket. I killed a half hour wandering around the place wondering vaguely where their hot chocolate was, and why you would pay someone 5 dollars for a small container of spaghetti marinara.

I was back at the museum at 11 and very glad when they finally opened the door and let us in. I waited a minute or so and the professor showed up, then we waited a few more minutes... and no one else showed up *L* It being 11:10 by then, which is the longest she was willing to wait, we got our tickets and headed inside. The professor knows I'm not an undergrad and what my degrees are in, so she pretty much left me alone, occasionally stopping to see if I was getting everything or I would throw a question her way. I took notes, and learnt a lot about Jain and Buddhist art. It was actually a lot of fun. She treated me to lunch downstairs and we talked about my post grad plans and how awful it is to be pickpocketed. After lunch, we covered the three lower floors which were Buddhist, Hindi, Himalayan etc art. I've seen a lot of art like this before, but I feel like I understand it a lot better now. We finished up around 3 and went our separate ways. I headed over to the nearby Tea and Sympathy looking for specific tea flavours, but while they had a good British snack selection, their teas were rather lacking (also, I can totally buy most of the things they sell in my local supermarket, yo). I decided to head to Kinnokuniya and Book Off, but discovered when I hit the Time Square subway station that they arbitrarily close the line to Bryant Park on weekends, which meant I hiked miles there and back (with my obligatory walking the wrong way for at least a block before having to go back to the other way confusion - something about NYC really throws off my sense of direction).

I finally made it to Kinnokuniya, talked myself out of buying bento stuff (I refuse to make Hello Kitty onigiri), contemplated buying daruma, bought a cute plastic slip folder since I always need more of them, then made my way to Book Off. At Book Off I went searching for a copy of Uebashi's Seirei no Moribito series cause I can't afford to buy the English version of the second novel onwards, but could afford 1-3 dollars for the Japanese one, even if I'd read it a hell of a lot slower. Unfortunately, all they had were several copies of the first novel, which I did buy one for $1 just for fun, but I wish I could have found the second novel. I contemplated buying a bento or something at Kinnokuniya for dinner, but by them my legs were killing me and I figured if I sat down for dinner, I'd never get up again, plus it was getting late and colder. So I walked back to Time Square and caught the subway back to Penn. Station where I had a very small window to eat and brush my teeth before catching the train. Unfortunately for me, I ended up at a Tim Hortons where they couldn't get hot chocolate to come out of their machine to save their lives. They were like, "Do you like coffee?" "No, I can't have caffeine." "Okay. I'll get you coffee." "No. I can't have caffeine!" "Oh." *shrugs, wanders off* Customers quit the line, I'm still waiting. Finally they hand me the worst cup of watery hot chocolate I've had in my life. I throw it away later, scarf down an okay donut and an awful sandwich wrap, marvel at how many homeless people there are in the train station, brush my teeth then catch the train. When I got home, I ate a better meal then took a muscle relaxant since my knee was killing me from all the walking.

It was still bothering me on Mon. so I skipped Buyu, which is probably a good thing since my readings for my Indian history class got side tracked when the professor asked me for pics of all the Buddhist places I've ever been in my life. I discovered over the past few days that this is actually a lot of places, and that I photo documented pretty much everything (there were like, 4 stupas I took pics of before I ever knew what a stupa was). Consequently, I've been spending all this free snow time organizing my pictures from Japan, China and Taiwan and identifying all those things I took pics of without knowing what they were. It's a lot of work, but it makes me feel good that I can identify things now, and that everything is labelled. Once I get it fully linked up, and checked over, I'll post it up on here too.

Snow yesterday was pretty impressive. I was out in it around midday. I did a quick shovelling of our car and sidewalk in the hopes that it would make it easier to shovel in the morning (though I had no plans to go to class since it would have been awful to travel there that early through the snow. Luckily, they cancelled it, so yay!). Unfortunately, something like 8-10 inches came down after I shovelled so it didn't make too much of a difference when I shovelled today. Oh well. You've probably seen enough pics of the snow, but I get a kick out of showing the amount on top of my car, which since it was in Florida for its whole life, is experiencing its first snow storm *pets it* In honour of the snowstorm, I made french toast casserole last night. So yummy, and so easy to make. Today, I'm mainlining Glee and Atashinchi no Danshi, and getting a bunch of small things done. Ja ne!

Eee! I'm going to the Rubin Museum for the first time on Sunday. Did you stop by either the 'Visions of the Cosmos' or 'The Red Book of C. G. Jung' exhibitions?

I haven't been to NYC for several years, so this time I'm actively looking for hidden niches/nifty places off the beaten track.
