We paid to get a scrubbing done which is when an ajumma (middle-aged woman) scrubs your skin so hard (you are naked, shes in her underwear and bra) that it removes the top layer of the skin.
The cultural norms around nudity/touching in Asian countries are really interesting to me. My in-laws are from the Philippines and there's not a lot of communal bathing there that I'm aware of (maybe because of the Catholic influence) but they do touch a lot more, like MIL will casually hold my hand or take my arm while we're walking through the mall. I would never think of doing that with my own mother or sister - I guess it's just an uptight American thing. (I don't know what it's like in Europe aside from the fact that they have topless beaches.)
