Allow me to present an entry about Genoa - Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy style.
Genoa -
At first glance, Genoa is a horrible city. At second glance, this is still the case, but it does have certain redemable features like a thriving drug trade, prostitution, and an aquarium. Only one of these features is advertised by the city tourist board strangely enough. Genoa is extolled for its quaint historical streets which wind through the old part of town, otherwise known as a good place to get mugged. The easiest way to get lost in Genoa is to start walking; the second easiest way is to try taking the bus. Seeing as these are the only two ways to get around town, you're in for being lost a lot. There are many museums but the one you want to see will always be closed for renovation. The aquarium is very nice.
------
Okay, so am exagerating slightly here. The prostitutes and the drug dealers only come out at night and I have yet to be mugged. That's about it. Enjoyed the oriental museum and the aquarium really was a lot of fun, not to mention took up a lot of my afternoon since they kick you out of the hostel from 10-3:30. Also had my first real gellati which was sinnfully delicious.
Still have cold, which seems to be getting worse, and was merciously bitten by mosquitos last night so I'm twitching like mad and don't expect much sleep tonight. (EDIT: Actually, am worried I'm having an allergic reaction to something I ate. I got itching things like this the last time it happened and largely on my hands and feet which is where these bites are. If that's the case, then I need prescription antihistamines to stop it, which I don't really have access to. I hope that's not the case.) Cannot wait to get to Verona where a lovely hotel is waiting for me. On the plus side, I have clean clothing again and my towel is washed and handy.
Nice, btw, was absolutely lovely. The city itself reminded me of a much larger version of the French quarter of New Orleans (only without hte humidity, voodoo, jazz and naked dancing girls). My hotel room was also lovely and I could sleep with the window open and not get eaten alive by mosquitos, not to mention I had far too much fun watching french, german and italian television. I watched Lost World in German, X-men the Movie and Mutant X in french (which were both playign at the same time for some odd reason), and a special on twins in Italian. But before I settled into the hotel room for the night, in fact, right after I checked in, I got changed and walked 20 minutes down to the beach. The beach itself was absolutely divine. The water was gorgeous, perfect to swim in, the beach was rocks so no sand in my suit and I sunbathed and swam and sunbathed again for hours even with my cold. Dinner was chinese take away and afterwards I sat at a cafe, had my last two glasses of sweet French cidre for awhile and wrote my book, finishing off the first chapter. In the morning I watched the new teenage mutant ninja turtles in french (kept cracking up every time they said cowabunga) and yu gi oh (the french dub voices were hilarious).
It took three trains and one bus (driving through Monnaco, which was pretty at least) to get to Genoa and was not impressed when I got here. Won't even go into how hard it was to get to the hostel or how much trouble I've been having reserving a hotel room in Verona.
Ja ne.
