My life has been quite crazy for the past few days. The papers I had due kind of took over my life from Tuesday-Thursday. With about four hours of sleep, I caught a flight in the evening back to NJ. I slept for the entire flight, which is quite rare for me. Then, after a night of catching up with my family, I ended up waking up super early to drive with them up to Rochester for my brother's graduation. I slept for half of that trip too. We had an amazing meal at Sticky Lips a barbecue place in Rochester which was simply put, amazing. Great meat, great drinks, great cornbread, great sauces, etc. That evening, we watched this episode of Kitchen Nightmare, then I had to do some work on the fulbright application, and then it was early to bed since we had to be up at 6:30am to get my bro to graduation. The graduation itself was boring, as all graduations are, but I am very happy for my brother (and brought a book to read through the boring parts).
In the afternoon, we went to The National Museum of Play which is an awesome place, not only for kids, though some areas of it are very geared towards them, but also adults. We had a lot of fun in the superhero section, and the children's books section (they had a screen which read your movements and projected fire wherever you moved your hands and body - instant firebender!). We went inside the butterfly garden there which was utterly amazing. I have never seen so many varieties of butterflies or been so close to so many of them. We eventually headed upstairs which is a bit more adult oriented in that they have a huge collection of toys from all eras including a lot of creepy dolls. There was also the arcade area which is a large amount of old, and occasionally newer arcade games all in one place with very cheap tokens. They occasionally hand them out for free and my brother and I were lucky enough to receive some, so I played the arcade game of Paperboy for the first time (much more detailed than the nintendo one I played as kid), and we played Galaga together. Then Missile Command, then X-Men, then I watched my brother play the first Star Wars game, and some game where I was supposed to save all the humans... *g* I advise any who visit the museum to carefully limit your tokens since I think we were there a few hours more than we planned. In fact, by the time we left around 4pm we were all exhausted so we ended up just doing some shopping before going to dinner.
Dinner was at this lovely Belgian style pub called Histoire which had lots of tasty Belgian style ale including the fruit ales I love, and pomme frits fried in duck fat. Yum. My dad and I had a duck confit reuben which was really tasty (though their vegetable sides let them down), while my mother had mussels and my brother had mac and cheese. All in all, it was a lovely meal. Then we had a long, long drive home. We got back to the house at 3am! I conked out and slept until 11:30am, and now I'm back online to get things like my fulbright application completed.
