I didn't hate the flirting with the tree lady as much as I dislike Nine/Rose. Doctor/companion feels entirely wrong to me. Doctor/not companion doesn't bother me in fan fic. Doctor/anyone feels out of place for me in canon. I realise it's a personal thing and other people will love it but... gah. For me it's spoiling an otherwise great series of Who.
There was his comment in the last episode, "I'll hug anybody." that shows it doesn't mean all that much to him.
Yeah, but then, as you say, there's all the deep looks etc. Four leaving Sarah Jane was moving and wonderful and it didn't need all this shippy nonsense.
that comment by the Dalek about the woman you love was so singularly out of place.
