Don't think it was intended to be a retelling of Cinderella so much as Another Elemental Masters Book. She's having fun with the elemental masters' premises lately, but it's not strong enough to carry a book on its own, so she tosses in fairy tale patterns. I think the book before this one (which I haven't read yet) was based on Sleeping Beauty.
This bothers me very little. A friend of mine once referred to Lackey as the dime novel of the fantasy genre, and that's pretty accurate in my opinion. I don't read her looking for great writing, but light fluffy reading with a happy ending. Whatever works.
That said, I thought The Fairy Godmother (another of her latest, and not an elemental masters one) was pretty good, for all that it really did look like a romance novel. The premise delighted me.
