My quick survey of people who saw ROTK but haven't read the books reveals that everyone is quite confused over why Eowyn isn't upset about Arwen showing up and taking her man, and that my automatic response of 'oh, well she and faramir fell in love' leads to them giving me looks like I'm making this all up. 2)Nobody cares about Denethor and are humouring me by listening to me rant about how his character was changed. 3) Sam/Frodo is very obvious and according to my mother, very annoying (something which I'd sort of have to agree with, but by this point I've learnt to block it out, or to add in fun comments like "I don't think there will be a return journey... so let's shag!"). I did a poor job of explaining to my mother why they couldn't have taken out the majority of those lines, or the meaningful looks, or the friendship and remained true to the books. 4) We all feel very sorry for the guys who have to light the beacons on the highest peaks in the beacon lighting scene.
