Well, Bioware's games are extremely time-consuming, so I can't completely recommend starting one. They're also addictive.
Baldur's Gate was more satisfying from the storyline perspective, but NWN is also pretty good (and visually is a major improvement).
If you ever have a lot of time, a computer, and some cash to spend on software, I'd without reservation recommend NWN, BG1, or BG2.
The good thing about NWN is that there is a big community, so there are lots of free campaigns and mods.
