Thank you. Great post! I was very thoroughly spoilered and haven't seen the movie; too many things are wrong and it's missing too much of what I loved from original Trek. Kirk's attitude, Uhura's characterization being as-she-relates-to-Spock, the *#$@# turbolift clip that was going around, the sexism, the racefail (when there could have been so many ways to do it right, starting with telling the Gary Mitchell story instead)... and the mind-meld alone would have been a dealbreaker for me. Just... no. >.<
It's heartbreaking because it could have been so good.
I can't say I paid to see the movie (since I don't believe in supporting whitewashing), but I've had to have so many arguments with people about how, yes, whitewashing Khan is wrong, that I had to see it so they couldn't go, "Oh, but it works in the movie.". It's ridiculous how many people are like, "But it's Benedict Cumberbatch!" So? *headdesk*
Have you seen the Bum Review of the movie btw? Hilarious and spot on.
Sadly, it just felt like a generic scifi movie, or perhaps a poorly written fanfic (the plot makes absolutely no sense, nevermind the poor characterizations or the entire scene lifted inexplicably from Wrath of Khan). I was really shocked by the mindmeld scene. I was kinda like, "Uh, Spock are you trying to ease his pain as he dies?" Nope. He later specifically states that he was just curious about what death was like... Since he was also having a 'relationship' conversation with Uhura at the time (while on a mission, so unprofessional and they had Uhura insisting on it *ugh*), I was pretty much like, "I don't even recognize this character as Spock anymore."
The sad thing is that the plot would have been fine if they hadn't made him Khan. He could have been anyone else in Khan's crew trying to fulfill Khan's dream and it would have worked. Though, like you, I was really hoping they would do Gary Mitchell instead because that would have made sense, been awesome and also have been a good bit of character development for Kirk. They could have just done a 10-15 min version of the first episode showing Gary with the glowing eyes as the first part of the movie, then jumped forward a year and done a very similar plot with Gary out for revenge.

Well, I hope you don't mind me spoiling it a bit more
