America, documentaries, empires

I renewed my rather low key interest in American history today by watching the documentary, American Colossus. It had a lovely turn of phrase, calling America "The Empire in Denial" which I thought was particuarly apt, especially since I make a habit of studying past empires. Fun stuff, and the best overview of American history I've seen in awhile, plus the lack of patriotic bias was refreshing, even if I don't agree with all of Niall Ferguson's conclusions. Of course, now I feel like going off to read stuff about Rome... (Article on the topic here.)

Indeed "The Empire In Denial" is aptly named, especially if the national seal said "Democracy Here Is Run by Hypocrisy".
