You know you've been out of a fandom too long when you can look at this fictionalley thread and feel nostalgic. Of course, the thread also makes me feel really old since this girl keeps pointing out how much of an 'oldie' she is, when she registered over eight months after me. Her fixtation on post count is hilarious though. I probably shouldn't even mention that I hadn't noticed the site had been changed over to a new format or that there were new icons available etc...

Even more nostalgic was looking through the 'Help! I'm Looking for...' forum. Time was I used to know a fic for nearly every request there and I had to hand type the url of each one of them after walking seven miles uphill, through the snow, to find an internet connection. Now, I'm just pleased to see that Uric is still being recced. *smiles happily at friendslist*

His fixtation on post count is hilarious though.

I love the fact that actual oldbies (some who have been around since FA was founded or before) are being put down because they don't have a high enough post count. Heck, I doubt if my post count is even high enough to get me on that thread. *snorts*

Aeryn is such a pain in the butt. But so fun to laugh at.

*giggles helplessly at second paragraph*

Man, I look at that thread and remember why I'm not nostalgic. Hmmm. *wry gryn* Though what I'd really love is a section of FA where you get all of an authors' fics listed on one page, instead of having to hop from house to house.

Oh lordy. How clueless can some people be?

Applauds.

And no, I can't use my modly influence to get that. Seems to be a tech issue.

NM

PS. As for Aeryn, who is girl, she is actually quite nice, but I've already suggested she take it a bit more easy over the changes.

I figured it was a tech issue; it's too logical a thing to overlook. But I can still dream, ne? *wry gryn*

And yep, I saw several people suggesting to Aeryn that politeness might stand her in better stead, and I've seen her be much nicer in other areas. Still, it's an exhausting business, which is why I don't post much anymore.

I'd be tempted to flaunt my oldbie status to this doof, but I seem to have a) forgotten my FAP password and b) forgot what email I signed up for it with.

Most of my postcount came from the ezBoard, which is scary in itself...

(there's icons? ...which shows you how much I've been over there in the past 3 years)

You might want to suggest she stop doing things like this (http://www.livejournal.com/community/op_society/) as well...

I'm finding it all very entertaining, though like all threads like this, it begins to get repetitive after the first couple of pages.

I think it's something about being so far away from the fandom at this point, that I can look at a fandom wank and be nostalgic, especially one as low key as this one. It's the knowledge that none of what you're reading is really going to affect you. There's some really entertaining lines in it as well.

Though what I'd really love is a section of FA where you get all of an authors' fics listed on one page, instead of having to hop from house to house.
Great minds... *g*

I'm tempted to post there just to see if I make her cut. I joined April of 2002, but I only have 460 something posts total. I probably don't have enough posts. Le sigh.

At least I didn't mention the handcranks we used to use to get pages to load...

I didn't actually join the site when it started because it was too confusing, and I really wasn't interested in message boards. The icons are actually a pretty cool idea. I did make an effort to get up to 299 posts in the beginning since I wanted to be able to use my own avatar, but after that I slagged off, and later lost interest in fandom. Yadda yadda yadda.

Well, the new design *is* better, but it's still not optimal (and is potentially too confusing)

I don't know why "being able to navigate old FA" should be a badge of honor. Rather, it states that old FA was not exactly operating on high standards of usability.

I was never more than semi-active in fandom, but it occurs to me that almost all the writers that I read and reviewed are now pretty much uninvolved with it. I wonder how long the average fandom lifespan is?
ext_12918: (Default)

From: [identity profile] deralte.livejournal.com

For me, the average lifespan for any fandom is 6 months to a year (unless it's a small obession, since then it can last only a month). HP was unusual in that it lasted for something like two years probably due to all the fanfic which could keep you going.
