So I just watched Gankutsuou, which is an anime based on The Count of Monte Cristo. The art style is very pretty but hard to get used to. I think it's a lot like what The Sandman would be like if it were ever animated. The plot starts with the Count already after his revenge but it takes place in outer space and the count is said to be an alien. It's odd, but interesting enough so far. It's also oddly slashy with the young man (I hestitate to call him the main character) blushing when the Count asks him to lunch, and accusing his best friend of being his girlfriend or mother.

My head is still pounding with my perpetual headache, though I'm showing no other symptoms so the Doctor couldn't figure out what was wrong. I'm on antibiotics as a matter of course, and they will hopefully have some effect, but this is annoying.

It's still possible to guess what my Hallowe'en costume is going to be and get a drabble from the fandom of your choice (providing I know said fandom). Hints on the costume are, I've written fic for this particular fandom and I'll be carrying a weapon on Hallowe'en;)

...say WHAT?!?!?!

*completely unable to wrap head around the idea of this being based on the book*

Well, as far as I can tell, it opens right at the point where in the book, the Count is becoming friends with - was it the son? - of his enemy which is what he seems to be doing in the anime, at a carnival, which I also believe if from the book, only it takes place on a moon in space. I have no idea *how much* it will agree with the book, but they are getting basic plot things right, keeping in mind I've only watched the first episode.

It takes place in the book, though rather differently. How thoroughly bizarre.

See, I've read the book, but it's been about ten years now since I did, and since then the movie has rewritten any older memories I have, though I remember the ending was much more tragic in the book.

Noooo, the movie was AWFUL! He ends up with the wrong girl, and silly kid ends up being (ridiculously and completely improbably) his long lost son, and it was just painful. Though Jim Cazriel (whatever his last name is) definitely looked great, and Dumbledore's bit was brilliant. But aiiiiiigh, so painful, so painful...

Okay, I'm a long fan of the book, and I think the movie was a travesty, I admit. *wry gryn* It took all the artistry out of his revenge schemes, completely left out the part where the question of whether revenge is a worthwhile pursuit is raised, and annihilated my favorite character (Haydee). The ending of the book is only tragic for Mercedes, and I just haven't got much sympathy for Mercedes because I think she's a twit.

Hmm. See, I remember being disappointed in the ending of the book, so I did like that the movie rewrote it, and was indifferent to the rest of the plot since it's always been the prison stuff I liked best about the whole story.
