This evening, I went to a lecture on prehistoric art by Paul Bahn, co-author of the - very familar to archaeology students - Archaeology: Theories, Methods and Practice, and many other books. The lecture itself was actually very entertaining since he was surveying a lot of new, fascinating sites which haven't been published yet. It was cool.
I got him to sign my copy of Archaeology which means I only need Renfrew's sig to have a matching set *L* (I considered the idea of archaeologist trading cards, but realized all academics do that anyway, only without the cards. Just ask anyone which famous _____ they've met in their own field and it's off you go...) I also got to talk to him about his new book Disgraceful Archaeology which is a fun, if overpriced book talking about things like buggering llamas (no, I'm not making this up...). He and the guy who illustrated the book are going to try to do a lecture next year which should be fun, if silly. I think they just wrote the book so they could discuss shite and sex for an hour with uni students.
In other news, my flatmate and her boyfriend are very amused that they actually know someone on University Challenge.

I have to agree I'd prefer listening (but not taking notes) on lectures, to writing them (not that I have yet, but our seminars get longer and longer in preparation for such a fate;)).

He was really cool, and you should come visit again next year when he does his next lecture so you can meet him.
