It seems to be my week for people trying to break my limbs. My partner nearly broke my wrist tonight. It probably wouldn't happen if I weren't so flexible, but since I am, people tend to overcompensate for how far my wrists/shoulders move (you can grab my hand and twist my arm over 360 degrees, no trouble). I can't really stop it from happening so I have to watch my partner very carefully while talking them into the proper way to injure me in the first place.
I'm not sure if my thumbs or wrists hurt more from tonight. The wrists hurt from my partner doing uregyaku on me, my thumbs hurt from me doing uregyaku on my partner since he was very strong and it took a lot of force just for me to put the gyaku on in the first place. Meh.
Last night, my dad and I, in a fit of nostalgia, watched Star Trek the original series for the first time in ages. Now, my entire family are trekkies. I grew up on Next Gen, my little brother's name really is Kirk, but to be honest, I haven't seen all of th original series. Most of the second and third seasons in fact. I think this is the first time I've watched it as an adult as well. I was struck by how horrible the lighting (shining a bar on people's faces) was, and just how very short all the women's skirts were. I'm sort of amazed they didn't have to sue for sexual harassment on the ships all the time... Surprisngly, the special effects when they're not on a cheesy alien planer were pretty good. I appreciate the tight trousers too. All scifi should have tight trousers. Yep.
So last night, we watched The Balance of Terror and City on the Edge of Forever. Balance is my favourite OS ep simply because I love the "submarine story" vibe and the excellent look at Kirk's counterpart on the Romulan ship. City is the one everyone thinks is great, and while I enjoy it, I'm left wondering just how stupid Edith Keller was for taking in Kirk and Spock (not to mention dating Kirk when Spock is clearly hotter *eg*). Loved that the Guardian of Forever was snarky, and I'm left trying to remember which of the ST books I read long ago that dealt with the Guardian and fallout from tampering.
We're probably going to watch a bunch more on Friday since I picked up my copies of the series (stolen from one of my older bros who is also a devout trekkie):D
