Went to my first lectures of the term today.
Medieval and Renaissance History - fun topic - the fall of Constantinople. The writer in me got distracted by the plight of the 4th Crusaders - far from home, abandoned by the Church and the Pope, abandoned by the emperor they had been supporting, forced to attack the city they had been defending up until then or starve...at which point I realized I was five minutes behind in my notes...
Discovered I have an Archaeology Practical tomorrow. Really must get enough sleep so will be awake for the two hours it requires.
Islamic History: Finally we have a lecturer who knows what he's talking about, even if it is all in a slow monotone that makes you want to throw a pen at him. Was distracted yet again by my as yet undeveloped idea to write a fic about the wizards who lived in the Islamic empire. Think I will have to file this under my 'no time to write' file along with my other idea for a fic about wizards in China (never did decide which dynasty). Should really get around to issuing a historical fic challenge. There just aren't enough of them...Anybody interested?
I'll be spending the rest of the day researching medieval kings for an essay, but will probably be distracted by fanfic at some point...

I would be very interested if I had the time, which I doubt I would. But I try to incorporate as much history as I know in my stuff. My latest interest is Greek history / early Church / and much, much earlier (Medea/Argonauts/etc.).

Are you studying anthropology/archaeology? I'm going back to school now -- for English -- but Anthropology and History are really really tempting me. Going to at least volunteer on a dig as soon as my job schedule will let me.

Re:

I'm an archaeology student. I go on a dig every summer (which is why you'll find me missing from the fandom for about half the summer holidays...)

I was recently interested in Greek history as well (my last dig was in Cyprus and I took the time to do a quick holiday in Greece to see the sights). If you need some advice on finding a dig, let me know:)

Re:

I will definitely take you up on that.

Currently considering quitting my job and going to school THIS semester.

It's awfully rash, but I don't know yet, and I need to get that sorted out before I even try to start looking for digs. There are a few locally over the summer, though. Perhaps we can swap tales.

Your journal looks cool! Trying to get one myself (will let you know when it happens).
Anyway, I'm a Literature student myself, but my parents are History teachers, so I grew up enjoying that stuff - my father is quite obsessed with Constantinople, actually...
The idea of wizards in the Islamic empire also intrigues me - my Sebastian the Desired subplot in Rebirth will include it eventually, but for now I haven't had the patience to develop it. Maybe one day...

I'm curious about the fic challenge. You see,I'm thinking of writing a fic involving Egyptian kings and/or gods that requires a HUGE amount of research. It incorporates certain Islamic elements too. I'd really like to read your historical fics if you get around to writing them.

Yay for historical plot bunnies! Eygpt seems a fascinating place to focus on, considering their past history of priests who are wizards. Historical fics always do seem to require a lot of research...I know a bit too much about the late 17th centuries these days due to Uric.

Will let you know if I ever do get around to writing any other historic fics, but Uric takes up most of my time these days:)
