I'm getting a bit annoyed at the anime cliche of a male character who is only a somewhat good fighter, but when his girl is put in danger, then he becomes a super fighter (with his opponent invariably commenting on the increase in fighting ability). (I'm sure this happens outside anime, but I can't for the life of me think of an example.) Not only is it a cheap way of showing that the guy cares for the girl, but it's completely unrealistic (okay, so most of anime is unrealistic. This is a pet peeve for a reason...). When you are fighting to protect someone else, you are invariably weaker. It has nothing to do with your fighting prowess or spirit, it just has to do with the fact that you are forced to fight while spliting your attention between keeping at least one eye on the girl and/or actively protecting her.

This is completely OT from your post, but I friended you because I thought your entries were rather interesting. I found you by searching my Friends of Friends list.

My name is Heather by the way, and I'm from the HP fandom.

It happens all the time, only not just with swords. You taunt any hero and nuse members of their family as leverage, their fighting improves. One such scene is from Buffy Season 4 - a Spike/Buffy fight, in daylight: he mocks the lover and she suddenly kicks his ass. It happens all the time, sadly. Do recall something similar in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

Stupid cliche.

In my mind, it's just bad character development. There are so many other ways to show that a character loves another.

Sexy icon btw;)

*nibbles on Smith* How could I resist? And I pout - I can't for the life of me write the man! It's always the way: can't write Grima, can't write Tara, can't write Smith...

I doubt it, sadly. I can never write my favourites even if I want to. Mind you, since I started playing with Boromir, he's become favourite, so maybe if I *play* with Grima and Tara and Smith...

Ooooh... Crossover...

And have you ever wondered that maybe Kenshin is so good because he was 'the One'? ;)

And he would be so much cooler than Neo, simply because he's so bloody good with that sword :) And how would Sanosuke fit? A kind of Tank character...? ;)

You're trying to kill me, aren't you?:P I will not write this. I will not write this. *whimper*

And wouldn't it be interesting to see maybe... oh, I don't know... Saitou as Agent Smith? It certainly does explain a lot...
