[livejournal.com profile] lizbee linked to some questions about how your writing changes, and while I don't actualy want to answer them, it did make me think about my body of work so to speak, and go in search of a few trends.

Oddly enough, I rarely rewrite fics, ie, I seem to have been rather satisfied by nearly everything I wrote - with the exception of Uric the Oddball's Fantastic Adventures which is certainly a sort of prequel to Uric the Oddball and the Wild Hunt despite the fact that Fantastic Adventures only began a few months before Wild Hunt since I'd already decided it wasn't doing what I wanted to do with the character. In fact, the only thing I like about the story now is that Uric got to meet Dumbledore... something I may resolve for the younger Uric in Here, There and Back Again.

My fics are usually written with some sort of agenda in mind - 1) humour/parody 2) character exploration usually by having two characters meet and interact 3) genre or style experiments. Sands of Time was written so I could see if I could write a novel length mystery story, and also cause I thought it'd be pretty cool if Dumbledore ___(spoiler)___ forced Harry and Snape to interact. Dear Diary was an experiment in first person pov, and maybe in angst as well. The Unexpected Guest was written so I could try my hand at Dr. Who fic, plus original character development in short story form.

My themes are generally friendship and humour. Goblin Uprising is the exception since the theme is family, though the friendship theme from Wild Hunt is still there. Though I suppose the theme of Intersections in Real Time is also family, and so, to a lesser extent, is Origami Tales and Gentlemen of Fortune. Hmmm. Another theme is certainly non-sexual relationships. I love writing friends and I love writing characters meeting and interacting as they may, or may not have in canon. This goes all the way back to fics like A Debt Repaid, to my most recent fic, As the Word. Those times when I do write something romantic/sexual in nature, it's either between original characters, or exploring some subtext I saw in canon. Case in point is Bath Time.

Looking at my original work, friendship is once again a major theme of two of my novels. My short stories cover a wide range from peace to horror to parody to social commentary. And one of my novels is so ambitious I don't even know what the theme is yet *L* Tis interesting.
