Well, today has been an excellent day. I got up at 8 to catch the train to Leeds. Once there, I was impressed with how the Royal Armoury managed to omit nearly twenty minutes of walking directions from their map of how to get there from the train station. The only way you could have gotten there in 5-10 minutes (walking; like the map said) would be if you could walk through walls and on water. I had to make a lot of intuitive decisions to find the place... Once there, it was a fantastic museum. I would have needed the whole day to see it all at the detail I like to spend (ie, read every single piece of text on every display in the building, and see all the various shows), but I did get to see everything (even caught one of the shows), if not read everything.

I spent two hours in the Tokugawa Ieyasu display, which was really well done and had a large number of things you can't see without going to the Nikko shrine in Japan. I also fell to temptation and bought two extremely reasonably priced modern wooden netsuke. One is a dragon embedded in a wooden gourd/egg, the other is a traditional tengu which I find far too cute. I rushed through the rest of the museum. Have seen too much armour to be all that interested by the tournament section and could safely skip any displays on the Napoleonic wars and such (though did see Wellington's scope from Waterloo). I wish I could have spent more time in the Oriental section though. They had an excellent Islamic, Mongolian, and Chinese selection. They also had the best summation of the American Civil War in two paragraphs that I've ever read. There was once again a beautiful sunset over the sea with clouds and everything kissed by gold on the train back. I wonder if I'll see it again on Sat.

Also, I didn't get the job I applied for. (It will surprise no one that it was because they're not allowed to employ people from outside the commonwealth). I know this will disappoint a lot of people, but I'm neutral about the whole thing. I really don't care how I spend the next year so long as I can write and live, so the only reason I was waiting to hear about this job was because it was affecting my summer planning. Now at least I know I can go visit my relatives out west and go home to see my family. I'm going to miss living here and seeing my friends. And yet, it may be a perversity of mine from years of my parents moving and divorcing and whatnot, but I like moving and seeing new places and having to adapt (despite the fact that I am certifiably one of the most unlucky travellers in the world). Part of me sees staying here as the soft and safe option, and there's a very stubborn part of me that doesn't like taking that option. So yeah, if you try to offer me consolation, I'll be telling you to fuck off.

Am now wondering how insane I am to get up for the 6am train to London. Then again, will be spending the day in geeky love of many different things from history to manga, and I get to see Les Mis. on sat, even if I am cutting catching the train home, very, very close. *winces*
