Have arrived safe and sound back in Scotland, though horribly jetlagged. Getting my oversized and overpacked luggage into my flat was not fun, but it never is. Nearly missed the plane when got dropped off at the wrong terminal and then Dad got lost trying to get back etc. Was very stressed and near tears. Didn't manage to do any french revision for trip which means I'll just have to wing it and see how much I really know. Will sound like an idiot I'm sure. Did get to research Italy and send off [livejournal.com profile] havenward's laptop at least. Only forgot one thing as far as I can tell - my calendar on my door. Had a headache for nearly the entire flight, so soothed it with alchohol (they handed me something close to a triple of brandy on the plane (and good brandy...) which was too much for me to finish, though it went well with my ginger ale. I'm used to the tiny bottles that BA hands you so it was a bit of a surprise.

So, I was on the plane, perusing the channels available and I stumble upon this show... called Monkey... otherwise known as Journey to the West. Yes, that Journey to the West:) It wasn't too bad a show for all it's seventies production values (picture a folk singer singing the theme tune which had a line "he was born of a mountain!" and Monkey with outlandish sideburns, and you have the idea). Was snickering through the whole show. Triptaka (otherwise known as the monk) was played by a woman, Monkey's headband really is exactly the same as in Saiyuki gaiden, Sandy (gojyo) carries that same useless weapon of his, though surprisingly he got along rather well with Monkey. Monkey had a lot more powers too, like he could change into this mechanical golden bee... sound familar?;) and he could possess people. He was also tall and looked suspiciously like the imposter in episode 10 of Saiyuki... Pigsy was a pervert, glutton and whatever else you want to add in and the plot was all about these youkai trying to capture Triptaka to eat him to gain immortality. So very amused.

Didn't sleep on the plane since I knew I wouldn't at that point and read the translation of the second Saiyuki manga instead. Sanzo's definately a bit more human in the manga... Other than that, have been rereading Thief of Time in the hopes of giving my brain something of a break.

Need to unpack and hit the bank now, though finding painkillers is at the top of my list. Later.

I agree with Cedar, though I would want you to move to TX on top of it. ~^

Was this "Monkey" a Japanese show? Or a British show? Somehow I can't picture America being cultured enough in the 70s to realize the myth of Journey to the West existed, but I could always be wrong. Be interested to see an episode or two...

It was Japanese, or at least Chinese. It had a nice, horrible dub to go with it, though it could have been worse, and it was a lot of fun to laugh at:)

It was made by the same Japanese company that made the Water Margin, which also rocked, apart from the awful dubbing of course.

BTW welcome back to sunny Scotland

Wonderful show. We used to watch it religiously every week when I was about 15. I think Bert Kwouk who was in the Pink Panther movies did some of the voice overs.

*L* Actually, I know the original chinese novel. Never saw or heard of the show until you mentioned it, though I imagine it was pretty cool:)

Bert Kwouk is EXCELLENT. XD I spotted his voice in there when I first watched it, but I only recognised it because he had a small spot on the insanely random comedic Harry Hill Show. He sang the Little Hen song. ^_^
